Activities

There are plenty of opportunities for learning, leading, and growing outside of our occupations. Below is a selection of organizations and departments I've participated in without being paid. Each experience left me with a greater perspective and appreciation of the discipline.

Official observer to the 24th United Nations Conference of the Parties

Katowice, Poland

I attended the 24th United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of the Parties in Katowice, Poland. Participated in a semester-long class about the history of the UNFCCC and setting goals for our research projects. Conducted interviews with delegates and attended sessions conducted by experts on environmental issues related to our project.

Journalist for the CSB/SJU campus newspaper "The Record"

College of Saint Benedict and St. John's University, Minnesota

Received assignments from the lead editor on a Sunday night to be completed by Wednesday afternoon. I conduced interviews with members of the campus community and researched the subject to write the articles. I had to maintain the tight deadline because of when the paper went to print. Board member of the Edlebrock Greenhouse

St. John's University, Minnesota

I set production goals for the greenhouse each year, helped create a web service to sell our produce to the community, and organized volunteers for harvesting and planting events. 

Board member of the Climate Action Club

College of Saint Benedict and St. John's University, Minnesota

I planned events hosted by the club, set meeting agendas, and publicized our activities on social and print media. I lead informational meetings on different environmental issues relating to events we were holding so club members could spread information throughout the campus.

President of the Eco House sustainable-living community

St. John's University, Minnesota

The Eco House community at St. John's University is a campus housing organization that students can apply to join if they demonstrate an eagerness to live sustainably. As president, I organized educational events on campus, set meeting agendas, and settled disputes between community members. At the end of the year I vetted applicants for the next generation of Eco House members.

El Camino de Santiago de Compostella

Camino Frances - France, Spain, and Portugal

El Camino de Santiago de Compostella is a pilgrimage dating back centuries that can start anywhere across Europe, ultimately concluding in Santiago, Spain. I walked 725 miles in 33 days starting in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, France, traveled through Santiago, Spain, and finished in O'Porto, Portugal in 2016. 

Long Trail thru-hike

Vermont

I completed the Long Trail, a wilderness trail from the Southern border of Vermont to the northern border. I organized resupply points and maintained the schedule to keep those appointments. The trail navigates the Green Mountain Range, over 267 miles with 67,250 feet of elevation gain.

Marathon finisher

Twin-Cities Marathon, Minneapolis and St. Paul

I completed my first marathon in 2018 with a finishing time of 3:20:58.

Secretary of the Morrisville Firefighter Association

Took notes during association meetings. The notes were then transcribed to a word document before distributing them to the department members and the state firefighting authority. I also made calls to honorary members, firefighters families, and community members to invite them to department events.

Master electrician for the CSB/SJU Theater Department

College of Saint Benedict and St. John's University, Minnesota

I created electrical plans for the instruments used in the performance, managed employees in executing plan, and participated in production meetings.

Sound designer for the CSB/SJU Theater Department

College of Saint Benedict and St. John's University, Minnesota

I worked with the director in creating soundscapes and soundbites that accented the performance. I was responsible for finding and formatting the specific sounds, instructing employees on the use of sound equipment, and participating in production rehearsals.

I've been a part of the on-stage production of the following plays between my time with the DeLaSalle High School theater and the College of Saint Benedict and St. John's University theaters: The Wizard of Oz, The Bacchae, The Tempest, Sin Parablas (an all Spanish play).
